Immediate Dentures

We offer an immediate denture service for patients who have a planned extraction due.

We will work closely with both the patient and their dentist to ensure that your new dentures are ready for you as soon as the extraction has been performed – thus ensuring patients do not have to spend any time without teeth.

Immediate dentures, also known as temporary dentures or same-day dentures, are a type of dental prosthesis that is placed in a patient’s mouth immediately after the extraction of their remaining natural teeth. These dentures serve as a temporary solution while the patient’s mouth heals and prepares for the eventual placement of permanent dentures.

Here’s how immediate dentures work and their key features:

  1. Preparation: Before extracting the remaining natural teeth, the clinical dental technician takes impressions or a digital intra oral scan of the patient’s mouth. This record is then used to create the immediate dentures in advance, ensuring they can be placed as soon as the teeth are removed.

  2. Extraction: Once the natural teeth are extracted, the immediate dentures are inserted into the patient’s mouth. This is typically done on the same day as the extractions, hence the term “same-day dentures.”

  3. Healing and Adjustments: The immediate dentures act as a protective cover for the surgical sites, helping to control bleeding and reduce discomfort. However, because the mouth undergoes significant changes during the healing process, these dentures may need adjustments to ensure a proper fit.

Patients may need to re-visit for follow-up appointments for adjustments during the healing process.
  4. Temporary Solution: Immediate dentures are not intended to be a permanent solution. They are meant to serve as a temporary replacement for natural teeth while the mouth heals and reshapes. As the gums and bone heal, they can change in size and shape, which may affect the fit of the immediate dentures.

  5. Transition to Permanent Dentures: After the healing process, which can take several months, the patient’s mouth will have stabilized. At this point, the immediate dentures may no longer fit well due to the changes in the mouth’s structure. The Clinical Dental Technician will take new impressions or a digital intra oral scan to create a set of permanent dentures that will fit the patient’s mouth more accurately.

Benefits of Immediate Dentures:

  • Immediate dentures provide a patient with teeth immediately after the extraction of their natural teeth, which can be important for appearance and speech.
  • They protect the surgical sites and reduce bleeding and discomfort.
  • Immediate dentures can help with the psychological adjustment to tooth loss by maintaining a natural appearance.

Challenges and Considerations:

  • Immediate dentures may require multiple adjustments as the mouth heals and changes shape.
  • They are a temporary solution and will eventually need to be replaced with permanent dentures.
  • Patients need to follow a strict oral hygiene routine to maintain oral health during the healing process.

Immediate dentures can be a valuable option for individuals facing the extraction of their remaining natural teeth, as they offer immediate replacement and help with the transition to permanent dentures. Patients should work closely with their dentist throughout the process to ensure the best results and long-term oral health.
